Working at Home With Kids By Kelly McCausey As I start this article I have four boys in the room with me ranging in age from four to fourteen. One is drawing at the table and three are playing video games. So my ears are filled with "No, that's me!" "Don't shoot!" "Want an alliance?" "Hey that's not fair!" "Well you did it!". I only have one son, he's twelve. The four year old belongs to the young mom who lives with me. The other two are spring break imports. All I can say, is thank God I don't have this many everyday! I am not a full time WAHM. I work four days a week at my church office. I work at home more than twenty hours a week though. I have to take great care to maintain some balance around the house. And I have had to learn to "find my quiet place" to work - even when I have four boys in the house with me. My computer is in the living room. I gave up my computer room to the four year old earlier this year. I have plans for an office in the basement. We just installed heat vents down there and we are working on finishing off a bedroom for my son. It will be at least a month before that is finished, so the living room is all I have. I like being in the same room as my son while I work. It makes me feel more connected, even as I work. And truly, it hasn't been too rough. Sometimes I have to ask for the volume to be turned down a notch, but generally I work fine in the noise. I was the kind of teenager who could do her homework with a radio blaring and a tv on. My son is the same way. But that doesn't work for everybody. Some people need silence and a peaceful atmosphere. What is important is that you find out what works best for you. I can work anywhere, anytime. Maybe you need to get up an hour early and work before you family is awake. Or perhaps you are better off working late at night or during naptime. (If your kids still nap!) If you have a lot of little ones, you probably can't imagine finding a stray hour anywhere! In that case, it's time to ask a friend for some help and arrange a kid swap a couple times a week. I share my desk with my homeschooling son. That is challenging. But we have a system of organization that we stick to and we manage. That is something else I hope to change when I get the new office ready. I just don't expect working at home to be the same as working at the office. And my office at work is not much quieter anyways! ______________________________________________________________ Kelly McCausey is a freelance writer, web & graphic designer.
